Gulf Island Boats

Framed and triple matted original watercolour (35"H x 31.5"W) by great Canadian artist Edward Goodall.

Artist Bio: Edward Goodall, a Canadian artist, was not the first Goodall to take up art as a profession. His great grandfather Edward (b.1795), grandfather Edward Angelo (b.1819), and grand uncle Frederick (b.1822), were all extremely successful artisans. After many years of travelling and honing his craft, he built his first studio in Oak Bay, Victoria with the proceeds of a thriving hand coloured postcard series. Two of his first large commissions, in the late 40's and early 50's, were a series of drawings of the pulp mill at Powell River and paintings for the C.P.R. ships. His scenes were always places people would recognize or relate to. The Devonshire Hotel in Vancouver ordered a series of old English Inns and he began doing paintings in water colour of private homes resulting in hundreds of scenes being used commercially. The originals were always sold and today are displayed in homes worldwide. In the mid 70's, he was approached by Mr. John deJong, Canadian Gallery prints in Port Moody, who eventually became his agent, and a very successful series of limited edition prints were issued over a number of years. Art cards were also produced and Ted no longer had to spend a lot of time promoting his work. Through the years he rarely exhibited his work in galleries since there was nothing on hand owing to a waiting list for sales. In the early 80's, he prepared a series of paintings for a one man show at a Victoria gallery, where people lined up outside long before the opening. He sold everything within an hour. He continued his successful career until 1982 when he died of cancer.

Windsurfers 4

Acrylic on Canvas 40"W x 30"H. An upbeat, happy comment on today's world, coupled with her award wiinning style, gives Val Sewell a dynamic presence in contemporary art. Interpretive and impressionistic, a reminder of Paris, "optimism and "joie de vivre" shine through her subjects - compelling viewers to share this joy.

Artist Bio: Born in England, Val grew up in New Zealand. She and her husband Peter now live in Kitslano, with four married children and five grandchildren in the GVRD. Initially a teacher, Val became a full time professional painter, in 1978, gaining immediate recognition for her distinct, vibrant watercolours and acrylics. Her style has been described as “interpretive and impressionistic – a reminder of Paris,” and likened to that of Mark Chagall and Raoul Duffy, whose “apparent casualness and whimsical approach to line belied an absolute mastery of craft.” Val, however, paints with a distinctive boldness and simplicity that defies labeling, making her an individualist, who unlike others, discovered her own style early in her career. She has been honoured with many awards, and has been featured in several publications.
