Positive Women’s Network

Hot lunch program provides essential nutrition and positive environment

The Positive Women’s Network (PWN) provides a safe, non-judgmental community for HIV-positive women, many of whom have experienced violence in the past and are now living in poverty. A key part of PWN’s work is their hot lunch program, served every Tuesday to HIV- positive women and their children.

Funding from the Shooting Stars Foundation allows PWN to serve lunches that include protein — like tuna, salmon, tofu, and cheese — that is critical to maintaining health. About 80 people are served a hot lunch every week and cold lunches are also provided on Thursdays. “Healthy, nourishing food helps the absorption of nutrients that can reduce the chances of an HIV-positive woman developing AIDS. Aside from the nutritional benefits, getting a good, hot meal makes a big difference in how the women feel about themselves. It gives them more confidence and energy,” says Roberta Vezina, Chair of PWN’s Board of Directors.

“We see families, women getting back on their feet and into the workforce, and women in the throes of drug addiction, who do not have money for good meals, coming in for lunch,” says Roberta.

PWN also offers a very comfortable environment for women and this is where a lot of conversations get started. Women can talk about what their needs are and support workers can help them access the necessary resources. “The lunches are a good incentive to get involved without walking into an intimidating situation. If a woman comes for lunch and feels comfortable, she’ll ask for help,” continues Roberta.

Many women are referred to PWN from organizations on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Aside from hot lunches, PWN is involved in advocacy and referrals; holds wellness retreats and outings; has a drop-in centre and a food bank; offers online support and education, one-on-one support sessions, and phone counselling; and has support groups for HIV-positive women and their families.
